Pacific Blue is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Virgin Blue that operates low-priced flights in the South Pacific, predominantly on trans-Tasman Sea routes. Airline began service between New Zealand and mainland Australia in 2003 in an effort by Virgin Blue to establish a low price competitor for the region.
