Juan de Acevedo (1551 - 1624), was a Franciscan friar born in Navarre, Spain. He moved to America in 1592 and resided with the Maya of the Yucatan peninsula for over thirty years.

He studied and learned the Maya language perfectly, using that knowledge to go deep into the Mayan culture. He is considered as one of the first mayistas along with other Franciscan friars who catechized the inhabitants of the Yucatan peninsula: Diego de Landa, Antonio de Ciudad Real, Juan Coronel and Bernardino de Valladolid, among others.

He was founder of the convent of La Mejorada, in the city of Mérida, Yucatán.

He died in Merida, Yucatan, on March 18. Works
