Yoruba Music


Yoruba music is the traditional musical genre of the Yoruba people. This population has an advanced tradition of percussion, with a characteristic use of the tension drums, in concrete of the dundun. These sets consist of several tension drums of different sizes, along with a gudugudu. The leader of a dundun ensemble is the iyalu, who uses the "talking drum" in imitation of the Yoruba tonality. Much of Yoruba music is dedicated to the spirits of nature and are devotees of Orishas and Yoruba mythology. / p>

Yoruba music has become the most important component of modern Nigerian popular music, as a result of its early influence with European, Islamic and Brazilian forms. These influences promoted the importation of metal instruments, written music, Islamic percussion and styles brought by Brazilian merchants. In the most populous city of Nigeria, Lagos, these multicultural traditions came together and became the root of popular music Nigerian. Modern styles such as Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde fuji, Salawa Abeni waka and Yusuf Olatunji sakara derive primarily from Yoruba traditional music. Classical music composers such as Joshua Uzoigwe and Akin Euba have excelled in the music scene because of their p for ethnomusicology and their tendency to use elements of Yoruba music in their works.
