Ustad Zakhi came from Nangarhar and was Pashtune. He composes more than 700 songs for many Afghan singers, including the songs Da Zamoong Zeeba Watan, Pa Loyo Ghro Banday Ra Taw Shwal Toofanona and Sanga Meena Zma Sta Wa.

The texts and the music of "Wro Wro Kaigda Qadamoona Ashna", which was used in the Hollywood film The Passion of Christ, was composed and created by him. The song was originally recorded by his wife Qamar Gula in 1974 in the Radio Afghanistan studio. After the release of the film, the Zakhil family used a lawyer to enforce the copyright for the song.
