Thakur (Indian title)

Thakur was a nobility title mainly used by the Rajput ruling classes of India, literally means "lord" and could equal the European title of baron. When a thakur died the eldest son thakures obtained the inheritance but all the children carried the title. The wife of the thakur was the thakurani.

The domain of a thakur was a thakurado or a thikana, generally granted in to profits (rents), but not in respect of land (in this case it was called according to what had to be given in return as jagir, istimrari the istimrardari the zamindari). Most of the Thakuras or Thikanas depended on another state.
