Roberto Garretón

Roberto Garretón is a Chilean lawyer in the area of ​​human rights. Head of the legal area of ​​the Vicariate of Solidarity during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile, he was arrested by order of a military judge in 1987 for having published an unfavorable article about human rights violations by the regime. / p>

In 1997 he was commissioned by the UN Secretary General to assess the war situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). His report drew attention to the grave situation, which in a short time would lead to an open continental war.

Since 2007, a member of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

Since 2010, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Chilean National Institute of Human Rights.
