Barrio de l'Erm (Manlleu)
The district of l'Erm is a district of the municipality of Manlleu, in the region of Osona, province of Barcelona, in Catalonia.
It is located in the northeast quadrant of the urban nucleus between the Avenida de Roma and the Paseo de San Juan. Its main nucleus is the blocks of buildings called Pisos de Can Garcia and Pisos de Can Mateu. The "Projecto d'Intervenció Integral del Barri de l'Erm de Manlleu" also includes the so-called Can Casas Apartments located to the left of the Paseo de San Juan. History
The neighborhood emerged in the early 1960s when the aforementioned blocks were built in order to provide housing for the large mass of immigrant workers, especially from Andalusia, who had arrived in the city, although they were also occupied if or to a lesser extent, by persons from the same municipality. The neighborhood took its name from the farm of l'Erm that existed along the Torelló road.
In the early 1970s, the church of San Pablo or Sant Pau was built and consecrated, which had a football field (now transformed into a municipal park) in which a local team played the name of the parish. At the same time the national school "Francisco Franco" (now Public School Puig-Agut) began to operate.
In the early 1980s the streets of the neighborhood were paved and the municipal market was built on the site between the public school and the Avinguda de Roma. Since 1993, the streets of the neighborhood have been hosting the weekly market on Saturdays.
The crisis of the 1980s had a significant impact on the neighborhood that suffered social problems that gave it a bad name. At that time the neighborhood came to be known with the derogatory name of "Vietnam."
From the late 1990s the neighborhood began to house Moroccan immigrants who have now become majority. The square of San Antonio de Padua today houses (2007) only establishments run by people of Moroccan origin, labeled in Arabic and Catalan, among them a mosque.
At the beginning of the s. XXI was inaugurated the Casal Frederica Montseny. The Barri de l'Erm Project (Project of Integral Intervention of the Barri de l'Erm de Manlleu), in the framework of the "Law of Barrios" of the Generalitat of Catalonia, approved in 2004, foresees a profound urban remodeling that includes , among other actions, the demolition of the Can García flats.
